When you arrive on campus in September, it will not take long for you to find out that there are a number of ways to get involved in your residence community! There are several different avenues that you can pursue to become an active and engaged residence student, leaving it up to you to choose your own level of involvement! There are a number of different groups within our residences that plan specific events designed to allow you the opportunity to get to know other students, and become involved in your individual building community. Residence Assistants often organize events that are specifically aimed towards your ‘section’, the area that you share with anywhere from 25-70 or so other students. These events encompass a variety of different themes, and can be anything from section dinners to movie nights to trips off campus to the local farmer’s market. Residence Assistants really look to the members of their community to get ideas for these events and often to help organize and run them! If you’re interested, there are always opportunities to help make something you’re excited about happen in your community! Interhall Council is another group that offers a variety of ways for you to get involved in your residence community! Each individual residence building has a specific Hall Council that runs weekly meetings and events for their particular residence hall. You can get involved by attending meetings, becoming a representative for your section or just going out to the events that council organizes! As well, the Residence Life Staff and Interhall Council often team up to bring you different Friday night events that often take place in your own residence building, or in convenient locations on campus! These events are usually very popular, and are often provided free of charge or for a very low cost! In the past we’ve brought in professionals to run karaoke in the residence dining halls, have had hypnotists put on shows in larger lecture halls on campus and have even run salsa dancing lessons with free food! Needless to say, these events are usually quite busy, so you’ll want to plan to attend! Again, it’s really up to you to choose your level of involvement! The residence experience is definitely what you make of it, and the more active you are within your community, the more memories you will build that will last you far beyond your residence days!
