Ola friends! Wouldn’t life be easy if we all knew right off the bat what, exactly, we want to do with our lives? Granted, that might be true for some of you, but if anyone out there is like me and graduated high school totally confused it might be reassuring to know that university offers such a wide variety of classes to be exposed to. First year should be your chance to explore different subjects and figure out how the content might apply to you, especially since as Guelph-ites we get to take 10 different classes a year. Early on, I would encourage you to treat your classes as theories that can be practically applied to the community in which you are living, and seek out opportunities that allow you to practice and refine the skills you are using in class. REG [http://www.uoguelph.ca/studentaffairs/reg/] is a similar forum to WebAdvisor, what you use to register for all your classes. It is a good site to get accustomed to, as it is a wonderful way to register for one time workshops and events that can compliment your academic learning. LEAD @Guelph is one of the programs run by Leadership and Community Engagement, and it is an amazing way for students to develop a strong sense of self, build confidence in their leadership skills, and establish an awareness of how an individual or group can utilize their leadership skills and abilities to address important social and political issues. If you register and complete enough of these workshops, you will be given a certificate in leadership! Good luck with course selection, and remember to check out REG come September!
