When I was in first year at Guelph, it took me a while to figure out how to study effectively for my courses. The new environment and campus activities made for lots of fun and enjoyment, but when it came time to study, the parties, late-night food runs, and movies can be big distractions. One thing I learned very quickly in first year was to find a personal space that was comfortable and free of distractions so I could concentrate. It’s common sense, I know, but it’s unrealistic for me to think that I can study in front of the TV, my computer, or with roommates or friends. Identifying the distractions which cause you to lose focus and making an effort to distance yourself from them are two of the first steps to developing good study habits. When it comes to reading big, heavy textbooks, unfortunately there isn’t a quick fix. I make chapter summaries as I read, instead of highlighting. When I start studying for the exam, I don’t have to bring the textbook everywhere and I have less material to review. Another bonus is that because I have recorded important information in my own words, I can understand concepts better and link them to personal experiences. What’s important is to find a method that’ll be beneficial to you as you study. If you’re curious about what university courses are like, check out our Guide for University Learning. You’ll get to experience part of an introductory Psychology course by listening to part of a lecture, seeing a sample textbook, and reviewing a multiple-choice exam. A Guide for University Learning is filled with tips and ideas from Guelph students to help you get off to a strong start academically. For even more tips and strategies, visit Learning Services online or in person. We offer workshops, one-on-one support, and online resources to help you study effectively, use your time well, and get the most out of your academic experience. The best part is that all of the services are entirely FREE to use. If you have any more questions don’t hesitate to email us at learning@uoguelph.ca. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you soon!
